The average gym membership gets used for six weeks. The average boxing gym membership gets used for years. I've coached in both — the difference isn't willpower, it's design.
A treadmill has no plot
Thirty minutes on a treadmill is thirty minutes of hating a treadmill. A boxing round is three minutes of solving a problem — and the problem changes every round. Boredom kills fitness habits faster than soreness ever did.
Someone is watching
At a commercial gym, quitting mid-set is invisible. At a boxing class, your partner is holding pads waiting for you. Showing up matters because someone notices. That social pressure is worth more than any app streak.
The numbers anyway
For the spreadsheet people: our group class averages 600–750 calories an hour on member trackers, versus roughly 300 for self-guided gym time. You also get coordination, bone density, and the ability to throw a proper punch — none of which a treadmill provides.
The honest trade-offs
- Regular gym wins on: price (barely), 24/7 access, pure muscle building
- Boxing wins on: adherence, calories, skill, community, the way you carry yourself after six months
If treadmills worked for you, you wouldn't be reading this. Come see what training with a point feels like — first class is free.
