The full picture

The age where boxing does the most good

Thirteen to sixteen is the window where habits set. Teens who train here learn to be somewhere on time, to take correction without sooking, and that hard things get easier with repetition — lessons school struggles to teach.

Sessions run like scaled adult classes: technique block, pad rounds, conditioning. Partner drills are introduced from month three with headgear and strict supervision — a teen who can hold pads and take a light touch to the shoulder carries that composure everywhere.

For those who catch the bug, the pathway is real: sparring squad, junior bouts, and eventually the senior fight team. Several of our current squad started at 14.

How it runs

How teen sessions run

An hour that mirrors the adult program — because teenagers know when they're being babysat.

Teen class doing pad work in pairs
Warm-up

Rope and movement prep — proper warm-up habits formed now prevent injuries for life.

Technique block

Same curriculum as adults: stance, guard, the six punches, defence. Teens learn fast — we don't slow it down.

Pad rounds

Pairs on the mitts, rotating partners. Learning to hold pads is half the skill.

Partner drills

From month three — light, supervised, optional. Catch-parry games and controlled touch work.

Finisher

Bag intervals or a strength circuit. Teens sleep well on class nights — ask any parent.

Questions

Teen & parent questions

Partner drills are light-touch and supervised — think controlled catch games, not fighting. Full sparring is a separate, much later step that needs parent sign-off and months of prep.

That's half the teens who start. Sessions are structured so nobody's watching anyone else — everyone has their own work to do.

Yes — Boxing Queensland runs junior divisions. When a teen is ready, we'll discuss it with them and with you before anything is entered.

Nothing for the first month — loan gloves and wraps at the desk. Headgear is provided for partner drills.
