Sparring done the way it should be

Bad gyms throw beginners in the ring for content. Here, sparring is earned and controlled — 60% intensity cap, headgear and 16oz gloves mandatory, a coach watching every second.

Sessions run twice a week for the squad: technical rounds, situational sparring (jab only, southpaw vs orthodox, ring-cutting drills) and open rounds for the experienced. You learn more in one honest spar than a month of bags.

For members chasing a sanctioned bout, the 8-week fight camp layers on S&C, nutrition and tapering — and you'll have a full corner on the night, because nobody from this gym walks out alone.

How it runs

The road to the ring

Six months minimum between your first jab and your first spar. Here's why that timeline protects you.

Sparring partners touching gloves between rounds
Fundamentals base

Months 1–6 in group classes — defence and composure before anyone throws at you.

Coach assessment

Marcus or Tony watches you on pads and makes the call. It's about readiness, not toughness.

Partner drills

Controlled touch work: catch-parry, jab mirrors, ring craft. Getting used to a human target.

First technical rounds

Jab-only sparring, then jab-cross. 60% cap, three rounds, coach in the ring. Nobody's winning a war.

Squad rounds

Twice-weekly technical sparring against varied partners — the real education starts.

Fight camp & bout

If you want it — 8-week camp, Boxing Queensland novice bout, and us in your corner the whole way.

Questions

Sparring questions

Usually 6+ months of consistent training, plus coach sign-off. Rushing it is how people get hurt and quit — we'd rather you be ready.

Done properly, no — 60% cap, headgear, 16oz gloves, coach watching, and you can tap out of any round instantly. Most members describe it as 'chess, but tiring'.

Headgear, 16oz gloves, mouthguard, groin guard. All available at the desk or bring your own — we check everything before rounds.

Not at all — most of the sparring squad never enters a bout. It's a training tool, not a conveyor belt to competition.

Earn a squad spot, tell Marcus you want to compete, complete a fight camp, pass the Boxing Queensland medical. Then we find you a fair matchup.
